Penge – Steeped in History
Surprisingly, Penge once was a very small town. The name derives from the Celtic name Penceat. This name loosely translates as ‘edge of wood’. Penge was once surrounded by a dense forest, which is where the name itself actually comes from. What many people may not be aware of is the fact that the population of this town, which is within the SE20 post code, was actually quite small until the arrival of the railways. The population and economy was dramatically increased thanks to the introduction of the London and Croydon canal, which was built across Penge Common.
