Penge – Steeped in History
Surprisingly, Penge once was a very small town. The name derives from the Celtic name Penceat. This name loosely translates as ‘edge of wood’. Penge was once surrounded by a dense forest, which is where the name itself actually comes from. What many people may not be aware of is the fact that the population of this town, which is within the SE20 post code, was actually quite small until the arrival of the railways. The population and economy was dramatically increased thanks to the introduction of the London and Croydon canal, which was built across Penge Common. When the canal was closed, it was replaced by the London and Croydon railway, which basically follows the same course. During the Victorian times, Penge became much more popular. One of the things that has made Penge so well-known is the fact that it was home to numerous murders between the 18 and 1900’s. One of the things that is most well-known about Penge is the fact that there are so many pubs in the area, most of which have actually been around since the Victorian era. Transport in the area is largely via train, although there are a number of bus services that run in the area. There are a number of schools that serve the area, and plenty of things to see and do.
